Mandarin/Nat Foreign plunder and cultural neglect have contributed to the loss of countless national treasures from historical sites and sacred ruins across China. Mandarin/Nat Foreign plunder and cultural neglect have contributed to the loss of countless national treasures from historical sites and sacred ruins across China. Now, powerful, rich groups of mainland entrepreneurs are joining forces and pooling their resources to try and retrieve those valuable artefacts which are surfacing on the international art market. If famous auction houses can't be persuaded to return the works of art stolen from China, wealthy groups are simply paying whatever it costs to bring home these priceless pieces of history. Tourists pose for pictures and clamber over the ruins at Beijing's Old Summer Palace. The ancient monument was built during the reign of the Manchu Emperor Qianlong. Jesuit missionary friends of the Emperor were commissioned in 1747 to design the Rococo palace, and work as architects for the structure's European-style palaces, surrounded by elaborate fountains and baroque statuary. Europeans became enemies a century later during the Second Opium War. British and French troops burnt the wooden Chinese pavilions and temples, leaving only marble facades, some broken columns and traces of fountains. Many ancient historical relics were looted at this time. Fountains, here rendered in stone and bronze with human forms and heads of animals from the Chinese zodiac- each spouting water for two hours in turn -were removed by enemy soldiers who made off with five of the animal busts. These ruins are all that's left of the palace itself. They attract thousands of visitors each year. So many tourists visit the monument, that efforts are being made to try and limit the number of people allowed to explore the ruins. China is proud of its cultural heritage, and many feel that historical treasures plundered by foreign armies during the Opium Wars should be returned. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) "I believe the national treasures should be returned to China. They shouldn't be auctioned." SUPER: Vox Pop, tourist SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) "Not only should we take them back, it's most important to stop them from being taken out of China again. This is important." SUPER: Vox Pop, tourist Three of those bronze heads - the monkey, ox and tiger - appeared for sale on the international art market last week in Hong Kong when Christie's and Sotheby's placed the items up for auction to the highest bidder. The sales caused widespread consternation among many Hong Kong and mainland Chinese. Scores of demonstrators gathered outside Sotheby's Hong Kong auction house as the relics were being auctioned off inside, and police were called to the scene as scuffles broke out. The protestors said the antiquities belonged to the Chinese people and had been looted by French and British troops in 1860. Stepping in to defend the mainland's position and rescue her stolen national treasures is the China Poly Group, an industrial conglomerate with interests in arms, property and telecommunications. Adding art to its list of interests, the China Poly Group with its strong connection to the People's Liberation Army, has embarked on a purchasing spree to buy back what China has lost to thieves. The group spent over four million U-S dollars in Hong Kong to purchase the three bronze heads which it intends to place in this special Beijing museum filled with looted Chinese bronzes. The Poly Group's mission is defined by a museum curator. SOUND BITE: (Mandarin) "If we only rely on government finances and government protection, it's not realistic. It need more private enterprises and people to join this movement to protect our antiquities. This should be the historical trend." A multi million dollar black market in antiquities threatens to rob Turkey of its heritage. The Lycian, Roman and Byzantine Empires have all left their mark on Turkey’s red soil. Cobbled ruins and sandy excavations offer up statues, coins and ornate tombs from ages past. Such relics are seized upon by professional smugglers, shipped out the country and offloaded in Germany. Director of the anti-smuggling police unit explains, “this business is done by culturally under developed people - the real point is to become rich quickly”. He then estimates that his force intercepts over 95% of the artefacts. But in Mugla prison, we interview a notorious smuggler who confirms that the police claim is “impossible”. He also maintains that many smuggled artefacts wind up in London auction houses, Christies and Sothebys. Six current court cases instigated by Turkish museums are underway to retrieve treasures from abroad. A white statue of Hercules exists in two parts. The rippled head and torso resides in the US Boston Museum while the stout legs stand in Turkey. Turkish archaeologists dream of uniting the two. It is poverty stricken farmers who sell lost treasures to the smugglers. During a flash flood, Adnan discovered an ancient tomb in his backyard and he admits that, “people ignore selling to museums because they pay you such little money”. The Maya Calendars 7.Ajanta Caves LOCATION - INDIA, Maharashtra 6.The Mask of Agamemnon 5.Skellig Michael LOCATION - Ireland Quick, what does Star Wars The Force Awakens, and The Witcher game series have in common? Skellig Michael, thats what. Skellig Michael is the larger of two islands off the coast of Ireland, sometime during the 6th to 8th Century AD a monastery was built, and the island became a hermitage. It is believed that no more than 12 people lived on the island at any one point. The island was suffered a Viking attack in 823 , and due to harsh harsh climate change, the island was abandoned in the 12 Century AD. Due to its recent rise in popularity, which will increase even more when scenes from the upcoming Last Jedi movie appear, conservationists believe the influx of visitors will negatively impact local Puffin and Storm Petrel colonies. 4.Panagyurishte Treasure Panagyurishte is a small town that has many ancient ties, located Bulgaria, the the town became famous for the immense Thracian treasure found there. You might have heard of one of the most famous Thracians - I’m SPARTACUS (such a great scene ) Back to the treasure, it is believed to have been used as a ceremonial set by Thracian kings, the total weight of all the objects is 13.5 lb (6.164kg) of 24 Karat Gold. If you had to put a price on the gold alone, it is worth $237,125 today. Many scholars consider this the best Thracian treasure ever found and people have commissioned a few exact replicas of it, some speculate that the original treasure which sits in a Museum in Sofia, is actually a replica itself. 3.Chan Chan LOCATION - Peru, Andes Mnts. You may have never heard of this place before, but it is the largest pre-Columbian era city in South America ! It served as the capital of the Chimor Empire, who were later taken over by the Inca Empire. Chan Chan translates to “Sun Sun”, it got its name from the incredible sunny climate in the area. The city was founded sometime around 850 A.D. and grew to an estimated 60,000 people in 1300 A.D. After the Inca take over Chan Chan fell into an economic decline, but that did not stop the Spaniards from looting an estimated 80,000 pesos (or $5 million in today's money) worth of gold from it. The city fell into complete obscurity and was abandoned, well only until 1969 when archaeologists began excavations at the site. Nowadays, the city is World Heritage Site and the grandiosity of it still inspires many explorers and adventurers. 2.Celtic Tomb In March of 2015, a team from the National Archaeological Research Institute started excavating a site in France, what they found was astonishing ! A burial chamber for a Celtic Prince was unearthed, filled with Greek Iron Age artifacts, Denis Gliksman managed to capture photos of the most prominent ones. We are looking at a wine cauldron with a sculpture of the Greek God Acheloos on it. The original god of all water ! Sadly, he got demoted to just a normal river god during the hellenistic period. These artifacts shed a new light on Iron Age trade 1.Terracotta Army LOCATION - China In 1974, some farmers in China stumbled across one of the most unreal archaeological discoveries ever, the terracotta army. Can you imagine what it was like to find hundreds of statues of soldiers all perfectly lined up? At this point, I would imagine there was an evil ancient curse, that would befall me too if I didn’t get out of there fast enough ! The figures date back to around 210-209 BC, and they are believed to be the protectors of the Emperor in his afterlife, they are made of terracotta, and sport some amazing details. Terracotta stands for “baked earth”, commonly referring to clay-based ceramics. The army is only a small part of the 38 square mile (98 sq.km) necropolis, the tomb of the emperor has actually never been opened due to concerns over preservations of its artifacts.

Record sales by major auction houses in Asia have been partly fuelled by the patriotic buying of antiquities by Chinese tycoons and state-backed organizations. Buyers from China, a country with almost a million millionaires, have been snapping up Chinese art and artefacts, reflecting their growing wealth and increasingly sophisticated tastes. A voiced AFPTV report.

Watch more and discuss: http://greenwich.itsrelevant.com/content/17756/chinese-antiquities-donated-to-the-bruce-museum In one of the largest donations of art in recent years, Fred and Jane Brooks of Greenwich have donated six Tang Dynasty ceramics to the Bruce Museum. "The Bruce has had the benefit of being owned by the people in town but really hasn't attracted people from far and wide," said Fred Brooks, donor of the collection. "It's our hope that this will be the instigation for other people, not only collectors of Chinese antiquities who could augment our collection and help it grow into other periods, but to make The Bruce a destination." A destination well worth the trip. The donated works all date from the Tang Dynasty (618-907 A.D.), which is regarded as one of the greatest periods of artistic creativity in China. "There are two types, one is multi-colored glaze, or tricolor glaze, as well as painted pieces," explained Brooks. "There is no rhyme or reason why one piece would be done the other way and some were painted and glazed. The pieces were created for decoration in the homes of the nobility but also as funereal figures, they were buried when the emperor died and were regarded to be utilitarian to be used in the after life." The gift and the promise of additional donations from the collection will help establish the Bruce Museum as an important center for the study of Chinese antiquities. "The museum will end up with one of the best collections of Chinese antiquities in the country and enhance the prestige of the museum and the museum enhances the prestige of the Town and of our collection." The collection will be on display through April 11th. Produced By: Sarah Michler

Where In the heart of central Stockholm on Skeppsholmen (opposite the Royal Palace), in the caverns beneath the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities. This is the first time that the "secret" caverns will be made accessible to the general public. Up until the 1960s, they formed part of the Swedish Navy's headquarters. The exhibition For the first time outside of China the artefacts will be displayed under ground, in the Secret Rock Galleries below the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities in central Stockholm. The setting is similar to the environment in which the artefacts once were found. - As a visitor one will get that sense of the first magical moment encountering the army face to face in the excavation situation, says museum director Mrs Sanne Houby-Nielsen. The setting is ideal, utilising the subterranean Secret Rock Galleries, the former naval base of the Swedish Navy. It's situated on the island of Skeppsholmen, opposite of the Royal Palace. The Rock Galleries are usually not open to the public. - We are positive towards using the rock galleries for the public, it is in accordance with our administration plans for the island of Skeppsholmen. We want to create a more open and creative meeting point, for Stockholmers as well as tourists, says Ulf Tomner, at the Swedish National Property Board (Statens fastighetsverk). The unique exhibition is possible due to cooperation with the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, Stockholm Visitors Board and the Swedish National Property Board (Statens fastighetsverk).
